How to feed flakes at every aquarium level

Float, drift or sink: change how you offer AquaFlake to bring food to the fish that need it.

For surface feeders: sprinkle.

Offer a small amount on the surface where the fish can find it. Watch the first feeding response before adding more. If one fast fish takes everything, try separate small feeding spots rather than simply increasing the total amount.

Break flakes into a size suited to the fish. Fine particles are useful for some small mouths, but unnecessarily crushing every flake can scatter food where it is harder to monitor.

For mid-water feeders: let food drift.

Allow flakes to move into the water column where suitable fish feed. Observe how the current carries them. The aim is to bring an appropriate amount within reach, not to fill the aquarium with suspended food.

Different fish in a community may need different formulas or feeding opportunities. Reaching every level does not make a single recipe suitable for every species.

For lower-feeding fish: pinch underwater.

Pinching flakes underwater helps them sink. Offer them near suitable fish and check that they actually get to eat before faster tankmates intercept the food.

Some bottom dwellers need a different food format or recipe. A carefully placed gel portion may suit certain grazers better. Start with the animal’s diet, then choose the delivery method.

What if flakes reach the filter?

Some particles can enter filtration. Begin with small amounts and watch where food travels. Adjust the feeding spot and portion rather than trying to compensate with more food.

Food intake, leftovers and the whole waste load matter more than expecting every flake to stay visible. Keep normal filtration and husbandry in view.

Our flakes are naturally brown to tan. The ingredients are selected for their place in the formula; we do not present the flakes as a multicoloured mix. AquaFlake is made using a quick, low-temperature cooking process.
