Our story: from a childhood fishroom to AquaMunch

It started at nine years old.

Long before there were product lids, retailer orders or an AquaGel range, our founder was a child fascinated by fish food. At nine, he gathered algae, mussels and shrimp from a creek, combined them with other ingredients, rolled and flattened little portions, and baked them in his mum’s oven.

It was the beginning of a habit that never really stopped: looking closely at what fish eat, watching how they respond, and asking what each ingredient brings to the diet. That childhood story describes where the interest began; today’s AquaMunch foods are purpose-made formulations, not creek-collected feeds.

A breeder’s problem became a founding formula.

The next chapter took that curiosity into commercial African cichlid breeding. Feeding was a daily practical responsibility. Appetite, condition, breeding routines and the reality of managing many aquariums all mattered.

Breeder’s Blend grew out of food developed for our founder’s own fish. Other breeders asked to try it and shared their experiences. The recipe became one of AquaMunch’s foundations—a food with a fishroom origin, rather than a story added afterwards.

Nutrition first. Flavour second.

Getting a fish interested in food matters. But enthusiasm alone does not tell you whether a recipe is right for that animal. We start with the intended fish, its feeding habits and life stage, then choose the ingredients and format around that job.

That is why an insect-rich tropical recipe, a vegetable-forward formula, a shrimp grazing food and an axolotl gel each have a different story. Explore how we approach formulation.

Made fresh to store in Queensland.

AquaMunch is Australian made. Production starts when a retailer orders, and most food is only a few days old when it leaves us for the store. We call that made fresh to store.

Our foods are non-irradiated, with added prebiotics, vitamins and minerals. Our flakes are naturally brown to tan; AquaGel arrives as a powder you prepare and portion at home. These are practical differences you can see in the recipe and feeding routine.
