Meet the ingredients behind the formulas. Find out what makes each one distinctive, where it fits and why its role matters.
Aquatic proteins and invertebrates
Australian salmon
Role in the recipe: Contributes protein and amino acids used in growth, tissue maintenance and normal body functions.
Its role changes with the complete recipe, from Goldfish Complete to the insect-rich Omnivore formula.
Atlantic krill
Role in the recipe: Adds marine protein and feeding appeal to a mixed recipe.
It appears alongside salmon, algae or vegetables according to the formula.
Squid
Role in the recipe: Broadens the animal-protein sources and marine flavour of the formula.
It helps distinguish Omnivore, Carnivore and Axolotl recipes from a purely plant-based menu.
Green-lipped mussel
Role in the recipe: Adds shellfish-derived protein to the overall amino acid blend.
It adds another aquatic source in recipes including Breeder’s Blend and selected specialised foods.
Earthworm
Role in the recipe: Brings another invertebrate protein source to an animal-focused menu.
It features in the fishroom-inspired Breeder’s Blend and insect-rich recipes.
Silkworm
Role in the recipe: Combines an animal-ingredient role with feeding appeal observed in our axolotl trials.
It also appears in selected carnivore and early-growth formulas.
Blackworm
Role in the recipe: Provides an invertebrate ingredient within the axolotl recipe; preparation affects feeding response.
Our observations distinguished enthusiasm for live blackworms from the response to dried blackworms; they are not interchangeable experiences.
Bloodworm
Role in the recipe: Brings a familiar feeding ingredient into a convenient formulated food.
The finished food is a formula containing bloodworm, not live bloodworms.
Brine shrimp
Role in the recipe: Adds a distinctive aquatic ingredient focus for suitable fish.
It brings a recognisable aquatic ingredient focus to a broader flake or gel recipe.
Decapsulated brine shrimp eggs
Role in the recipe: Offers small prepared particles without hatching or the outer shell.
Our separate egg blend is soaked and fed directly, with added prebiotics and vitamins in the mix; no hatchery is required.
Salmon oil
Role in the recipe: Contributes dietary fat; oils have an energy and fatty-acid role rather than functioning as protein meals.
It has a different formulation role from a protein meal, so the two should not be treated as the same ingredient.
Insects and specialist reptile ingredients
Black soldier fly
Role in the recipe: Supplies insect protein and contributes calcium to the ingredient mix.
It is particularly prominent in Ultimate Omnivore’s ingredient story.
Mealworm
Role in the recipe: Adds insect-derived protein and fat; its profile differs from other insects.
It adds source variety alongside black soldier fly and cricket.
Cricket
Role in the recipe: Broadens the insect blend, rather than treating every insect ingredient as identical.
Naming the blend helps keepers understand the animal-protein sources.
Snail meat
Role in the recipe: Adds invertebrate variety to the intended reptile diet.
This is a reptile ingredient reference, not a claim that it appears in every fish food.
Kangaroo
Role in the recipe: Adds a named terrestrial animal-protein source to Monitor Meal.
It is part of that carnivorous reptile recipe rather than a general AquaMunch fish-food ingredient.
Chicken liver
Role in the recipe: Provides an organ ingredient within a balanced carnivorous reptile formulation.
Its role belongs to the specific reptile formulation; it is not assigned to fish recipes.
Egg
Role in the recipe: Adds another animal-derived nutrient source to the specific reptile recipe.
Keep reptile and fish formula declarations separate when comparing the range.
Cuttlefish bone
Role in the recipe: Contributes calcium-containing mineral material to the recipe.
It belongs within the complete mineral formulation and does not remove the need for species-appropriate reptile care.
Algae, leaves and greens
Spirulina
Role in the recipe: Contributes algal protein and naturally occurring pigments within the complete diet.
Super Greens makes its inclusion explicit: 38% spirulina.
Chlorella
Role in the recipe: Adds microalgal nutrient variety alongside other algae and plants.
It broadens the algae blend in formulas such as Super Greens and Goldfish Complete.
Kelp
Role in the recipe: Adds seaweed material and its mineral-containing components to the blend.
The broader word kelp should not be assumed to mean that every formula contains the same kelp species.
Japanese kombu kelp
Role in the recipe: Gives the shrimp food a specifically identified seaweed ingredient.
Its identity makes the shrimp recipe more informative than an unspecified seaweed claim.
Moringa
Role in the recipe: Contributes leaf protein and mineral-containing plant material; amount and form determine its contribution.
We describe its place in the recipe without translating human-food nutrient comparisons into promises about fish.
Spinach
Role in the recipe: Adds leafy plant material to balance the character of mixed recipes.
It contributes to the plant side alongside the formula’s protein, algae and other vegetables.
Kale
Role in the recipe: Adds leafy greens to the plant and mineral ingredient story.
A named leafy green, highlighted in the mineral-minded story of Shrimp Essentials and in selected reptile recipes.
Alfalfa
Role in the recipe: Provides plant material and fibre within the selected recipe.
Its presence does not make those animal-ingredient-containing formulas vegetarian.
Stinging nettle leaf
Role in the recipe: Broadens the botanical ingredients in the grazing and greens blends.
It is described as a feed ingredient, not a medicinal treatment.
Indian almond leaf
Role in the recipe: Adds a recognisable leaf component to the shrimp grazing recipe.
It is part of the food’s recipe; feeding it is not a substitute for managing the aquarium’s water parameters.
Mulberry leaf
Role in the recipe: Adds leafy plant material and botanical variety for the intended grazers.
It adds to the recipe’s grazing-food character.
Raspberry leaf
Role in the recipe: Adds another distinct leaf source to the grazing blend.
It forms part of the named leaf blend in Shrimp Essentials.
Wheatgrass
Role in the recipe: Contributes grass material rather than a wheat-grain ingredient.
It is referenced in Shrimp and Snail ingredient information, so we avoid an absolute wheat-free claim for the whole brand.
Dandelion
Role in the recipe: Adds named leafy plant material to the reptile menu.
Its use should be understood within those specific feeding plans.
Vegetables, fruit and feeding appeal
Sweet potato
Role in the recipe: Contributes plant carbohydrate and vegetable material within the mix.
It helps give Vital Veg and Breeder’s Blend their broader vegetable character.
Pumpkin
Role in the recipe: Adds vegetable material to the mixed diet.
It is one part of the recipe rather than a standalone digestive remedy.
Beetroot
Role in the recipe: Combines vegetable variety with the goldfish feeding appeal observed by AquaMunch.
Acceptance is the observed role, not a guarantee of health outcomes.
Paprika
Role in the recipe: Adds a naturally pigmented plant ingredient to the formula.
It sits alongside other vegetables and pigments rather than carrying the colour story alone.
Carrot
Role in the recipe: Contributes a carotenoid-containing vegetable ingredient to the colour-focused blend.
It belongs with beetroot, pumpkin, paprika and the rest of that specific blend.
Broccoli / broccolini
Role in the recipe: Adds vegetable variety where included in the particular recipe.
The individual pack establishes which form a recipe uses.
Mushrooms
Role in the recipe: Broadens the plant-and-fungi ingredient mix in the listed grazing formulas.
They are not part of the corrected Super Colour highlights.
Banana
Role in the recipe: Adds fruit-derived carbohydrate and flavour to selected recipes.
It broadens the recipe without making the finished food a fruit-only diet.
Strawberry
Role in the recipe: Helps bring feeding interest to Snail Supreme.
It helps distinguish feeding appeal from the complete nutritional role of the food.
Blueberry
Role in the recipe: Adds a fruit component and variety to Bluey Blend.
It is a formula-specific fruit ingredient, not a universal AquaMunch addition.
Garlic
Role in the recipe: Adds flavour character within the broader ingredient mix.
We do not present it as a wormer or a treatment for disease.
Aniseed
Role in the recipe: Its aroma and flavour are used to encourage feeding interest.
Its aroma and flavour support feeding interest; acceptance still needs to sit alongside nutritional suitability.
Turmeric
Role in the recipe: Adds a distinctive botanical ingredient to selected formulas.
The finished food is not presented as a medicinal dose or treatment.
Purple sweet potato
Role in the recipe: A potential source of vegetable variety; a benefit is not assigned to a product without confirmed inclusion.
Inclusion in a particular current product must be checked on that product’s pack.
Green beans
Role in the recipe: A potential vegetable component; check the current recipe before assuming inclusion.
Use the pack to confirm a current formula.
Potato
Role in the recipe: Provides plant material; isolated starch can also contribute to food structure.
Whole potato and isolated potato starch are different forms with different recipe roles.
Pigments, nutrients and functional ingredients
Astaxanthin
Role in the recipe: Supports the pigmentation purpose of a colour-focused formula for suitable species.
The finished result depends on species and the whole diet; it does not guarantee identical colour in every fish.
NatuRose (natural astaxanthin)
Role in the recipe: A natural-astaxanthin ingredient name in the colour-formulation story. NatuRose is associated with microalgal astaxanthin, not rose petals.
NatuRose is a microalgal astaxanthin ingredient name used in aquaculture. Refer to the Super Colour pack for its ingredient declaration.
Other carotenes and pigment ingredients
Role in the recipe: Give a formula a pigment-related role, with results dependent on species and inclusion.
A named source or pigment does not, by itself, establish a measured dose in the finished feed.
Prebiotics
Role in the recipe: Used for the formulation’s digestive-support purpose through their relationship with microorganisms.
They are not living bacteria, and their presence is different from a claim about live probiotics.
Probiotics
Role in the recipe: Their intended function depends on suitable live organisms and evidence; a live-count benefit is not asserted here.
Some existing formula information mentions probiotics, but we do not publish strain names, live counts or survival guarantees without supporting information.
Vitamin mix
Role in the recipe: Supplies added micronutrients as part of the whole nutritional design.
Nurture & Grow has twice the added vitamins of our other formulas; that comparison is not a claim that more is always better.
Mineral mix
Role in the recipe: Helps provide mineral nutrients needed for normal body functions.
Balance and the intended animal matter, rather than simply maximising the number on a label.
Calcium / calcium carbonate
Role in the recipe: Contributes a named mineral source to the recipe.
Its presence does not mean food alone can correct every moulting, skeletal or water-chemistry problem.
Montmorillonite clay
Role in the recipe: Included as a mineral component of the formulation.
We do not market it as a heavy-metal detoxifier, parasite treatment or replacement for good husbandry.
Brewer’s yeast / yeast
Role in the recipe: Contributes nutritional yeast components, including B vitamins.
It is not automatically the same as a live probiotic addition.
Concentrated soy protein
Role in the recipe: Concentrates the protein contribution rather than using a whole-soy ingredient.
Processing and concentration matter; the current pack identifies the form used.
Pea protein isolate
Role in the recipe: Contributes concentrated plant protein where listed.
It has a different role from whole peas and is not assumed to appear in every updated recipe.
Cellulose (wood pulp)
Role in the recipe: Provides a fibrous structural ingredient for the intended grazing-catfish recipe.
It contributes to the intended grazing-catfish formulation and is not a reason to assume the diet suits every catfish.
Locust bean gum
Role in the recipe: Helps create a set, portionable gel texture.
Helping food set and hold a useful texture is a practical recipe function.
Potato starch and cassava
Role in the recipe: Can help with texture and structure in the finished food.
Texture and structure are useful functions; grain-free does not mean a recipe contains no starch.
Rice
Role in the recipe: Contributes grain material to the Carnivore AquaGel formula; it is not hidden by a grain-free claim.
It is a grain, so that formula is explicitly not grain-free. This exception belongs in any honest range comparison.
Listed preservatives
Role in the recipe: Support the product’s storage and stability requirements where used.
Refer to the exact pack declaration; non-irradiated does not mean preservative-free.
How ingredient benefits fit together.
Ingredients contribute to a complete recipe in different ways: nutritional supply, feeding appeal, texture or stability. Species, ingredient form and inclusion all matter. An appealing ingredient name is not a clinical claim about the finished food.
