Feeding aquarium fry: making the first feeds count

Start with feeding ability.

Freshly hatched fry do not all begin feeding in the same way. Some require microscopic or live first foods; others can accept an appropriately prepared food once they are ready.

Choose for the species and mouth size rather than assuming that all newly hatched fish can eat the same powder. Watch the fry actually take food before treating the feeding as successful.

Adapt as the fish grow.

Keep reviewing food size, acceptance and body condition. A feeding routine that suits the earliest prepared-food stage may need to change as mouths, behaviour and stocking conditions change.
