Prebiotics in fish food: what the term means
Prebiotics and probiotics sound similar. Understanding the difference makes product claims easier to read.
Prebiotics are not living bacteria.
Prebiotics are substrates used by particular microorganisms in a way that provides a health benefit. They are not themselves live organisms. The ISAPP consensus definition makes that distinction important.
Probiotics refer to live microorganisms supplied for a beneficial effect. Saying a food contains prebiotics does not establish that it contains living probiotic organisms or prove a live count.
How we describe AquaMunch.
AquaMunch foods have added prebiotics. We describe them as part of the formulation’s digestive-support approach, alongside the wider ingredient and nutrient blend.
Nurture & Grow is formulated with twice the added prebiotics and vitamins of our other formulas. That is a formulation comparison within AquaMunch, not a guarantee that a fry’s digestive system or immunity develops at a set speed.
Non-irradiated is a separate process statement.
Our foods are non-irradiated. That describes a manufacturing choice. It should not be rewritten as “all the prebiotics are alive,” because prebiotics are not living organisms.
Likewise, a process claim does not provide a vitamin-retention percentage or a live-count test. We do not invent those figures. Our Australian-made comparison separates origin and processing from nutrient claims.
What should the keeper focus on?
Choose a species-appropriate formula, prepare and store it as directed, and offer manageable portions. The whole diet and care routine matter alongside functional ingredients.
Use the ingredient library to see how prebiotics fit alongside proteins, algae, vegetables, vitamins and minerals.
