Imported vs Australian-made fish food: what to compare

Origin, freshness, processing and formulation all matter. Here is how to compare them without relying on sweeping claims.

What Australian made means at AquaMunch.

We make AquaMunch in Queensland. Our made-fresh-to-store approach starts production when a retailer orders, and most food is only a few days old when it leaves us for the store. That gives our origin story a practical connection to the stockist’s order.

Australian made describes where our finished foods are manufactured. It does not mean every ingredient is Australian grown or caught: we name ingredients such as Australian salmon, Atlantic krill and Japanese kombu kelp because their identities matter.

Import treatments are not one universal rule.

Australian import conditions depend on the commodity, ingredients, origin and processing pathway. The department asks pet-fish-food importers for full ingredient and processing details, including treatment of ingredients and finished food. Foods containing microalgae require additional questionnaire information. DAFF animal feed checklist.

A 2022 departmental notice gives examples for particular fish-material pathways: salmonid material at 85°C for 25 minutes, and non-salmonid material at 85°C for 15 minutes or 80°C for 20 minutes, with stated alternatives and conditions. This notice is not a blanket rule for every finished aquarium food. Read the original notice.

What about krill, spirulina and irradiation?

The ingredient name alone does not establish how a finished blend was treated. Microalgae documentation is not itself a statement that every spirulina-containing food must be irradiated. Krill products and mixed formulated feeds can fall under different pathways.

DAFF directs importers to BICON and their permit to confirm whether offshore irradiation is acceptable for a commodity. DAFF irradiation guidance. For an exact product, ask the manufacturer or importer about the applicable BICON conditions and actual processing history.

AquaMunch’s finished foods are non-irradiated. We can explain our own process without guessing the treatment used by a named competitor.

Processing is more than a good-or-bad label.

Making a safe, stable and useful food involves choices. Drying, mixing, cooking, binding and storage influence the final product in different ways. A gel that needs hot water at home also has a preparation process.

It would be misleading to say that every imported food has lost all its vitamins, or that prebiotics are living organisms killed by treatment. Compare an actual product’s formulation, analysis, processing information and storage guidance. Our prebiotic guide explains that distinction.

Five useful questions for the next food you buy.

Where is the finished food made? How does the maker manage freshness? Are the key ingredients clearly identified? Does the formula suit my fish? Can I find clear feeding and storage instructions?

Those questions work whether the food is local or imported. For AquaMunch, the answers start with Queensland production, a made-fresh-to-store approach, named ingredients and separate formulas for different feeding needs.
